What Do Electric Sheep Dream?

It appears that the prescient sci fi novelist Phillip K Dick knew us well enough to glimpse our future (several times over).  In his seminal work, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, robotic pets have become the norm.

You see people crave nature, especially deep within, sometimes without even knowing or understanding it. The more we divorce ourselves from natural cycles the greater the craving and our perplexity.

Perhaps it’s these longings that encourage the characters in the story to obtain, care for and even compete for social status using these digital replicas, which are of course still second fiddle to any biological animals that can remain on Earth despite what we have done to our environment.
